Erste schnelle Eindrücke eines weiteren kommerziellen Chatbots – und keine sehr freundlichen: Pi hat beim ersten Schnelltest mit einigem Erfolg versucht, mich in den Wahnsinn zu treiben.

Der Reihe nach: Über den Newsletter des KI-Verstehers Jack Clark bin ich auf Pi aufmerksam geworden, den Chatbot von Inflection. Ihr Inflection-1-Sprachmodell soll mit der Konkurrenz jetzt schon mehr als mithalten können – und wird auf heypi.com als Chatbot zum Testen angeboten. Ohne Anmeldung oder weiteres Gedöns.
Der Chatbot steigt immer mit einer Frage ein – und das scheint kein Zufall zu sein.
Wir wissen ja: Ein Sprachmodell ist eigentlich eine Textvervollständigungs-Maschine – und ein „Chatbot“ ist ein Sprachmodell, das darauf trainiert ist, Dialoge zu vervollständigen. Inflection scheint das auf die Spitze getrieben zu haben – was dazu führt, dass der Chatbot eher weiterchattet als tatsächlich Antworten zu liefern.
Ich fühlte mich stellenweise an das legendäre „Haus, das Verrückte macht“ aus dem ersten Asterix-Film erinnert – wo die Helden einer fiesen Bürokratie den Passierschein A38 abringen sollen. Oder an den „27B-6“ aus dem Science-Fiction-Alptraum Brazil. Anstatt die gestellte Aufgabe zu lösen – eine einfache Tabelle mit Geokoordinaten zu erstellen – nervte der Bot mit noch einer und noch einer und noch einer Nachfrage. Weil der Dialog so wunderbar absurd war, habe ich ihn unten in voller Länge zitiert.
Inflection ist… keine Garagenklitsche
Hinter dieser Firma steckt unter anderem der LinkedIn-Milliardär Reid Hoffman, sie hat nach eigenen Angaben gerade 1,3 Milliarden Dollar eingesammelt und will dieses Spielgeld nun verwenden, um einen neuen KI-Trainings-Supercomputer zu bauen – mit 22.000 modernen H100-KI-Karten, das sind über 30x so viele wie beim brandneuen KI-Superrechner der Forscher hier in Darmstadt.
Bei so viel Rechenpower und so viel selbst vergebenen Vorschusslorbeeren finde ich das Ergebnis meines Schnelltests extrem enttäuschend. Es lässt mich fast glauben, das Modell sei darauf optimiert, möglichst viel aus dem Gegenüber herauszufragen – vermutlich, um die nächste Modellgeneration über Verstärkungslernen besser trainieren zu können. Wenn das stimmt, testen wir auf heypi.com nicht Pi, sondern Pi testet uns.
Dass das Modell damit überfordert war, beim Thema zu bleiben und die Aufgabe zu lösen, ist vielleicht aber auch ein Beleg für eine interessante Beobachtung von Forschern: Sprachmodelle schauen tendenziell nur auf den Anfang und das Ende des Textes, den sie weiterschreiben, und ignorieren den Mittelteil.
In meinem Versuch antwortet das Modell auf die Frage nach Frankfurter Sehenswürdigkeiten und tabularischen Informationen – und vergisst, wie die Links aussehen sollen.
Um fair zu sein: das ist auch für GPT-3.5 eine fordernde Aufgabe – die das OpenAI-Modell aber hinbekommt, auch wenn OpenAI gehalten zu sein scheint, nur auf Dienste des Partners Microsoft zu verlinken und nicht auf Google Maps. Zumindest für diese Art von Aufgaben scheint Pi ungeeignet – weil das Modell möglicherweise zu stark auf Dialog optimiert ist und immer wieder unterbricht.

Wer die (kostenlose) Anmeldung auf dem KI-Modell-Portal huggingface.co nicht scheut, sollte dem HuggingChat eine Chance geben. Dort kann man eine optimierte Version des halboffenen Facebook-Meta-Modells LLAMA testen – die sogar Informationen aus dem Netz hinzuziehen können soll, was ja eine große Sache ist. Bei meinen Tests hat das bisher allerdings nicht funktioniert – und wie Pi spricht das LLAMA-30B-Modell nur Englisch.
